General Discussion:: NORTH AMERICAN UNION?
I think its a bad idea. The Euro is useful cause the countries are so small and so close together that it is a problem. Also when you make an exchange you loose a little bit of money to protect the person exchanging for you in the case of inflation (which in some cases jumps up and down all day).

In North America its three countries! I am from New York and rarely every went to Canada. Plus most places across the border take both currencies.

I doubt this will go all the way. My two cents!

General Discussion:: Reclassing
CECE, if you're carrying 3 languages, then I'd suggest PsyOps (37F) or Civil Affairs (38B) because you would get maximum use out of the languages that you do speak & you get paid extra $$$ on top of your base & allowances to speak them. (You've gotta take the DLAT to see exactly how much $$$, but I've got soldiers that make $1k a month extra for holding 2 languages.) What languages do you speak?

The two MOSs are actually great feeders for State Dept, DIA, CIA & FBI positions after the military if you manage your career correctly. Check it out (no I'm not a recruiter... Just love the job I do!) lol

www.bragg.army.mil/sorb

General Discussion:: Dipping while in formation and at rest?
I know people that can dip without spitting. I tried and was about ready to start writing my will. I am not an avid dipper though.

There is no regulation for it, however in my opinion, if I am your NCO and I say "no" then there is your answer. I would also not seem to play fair if one troop can go without spitting while another can not.

You also never know how long a formation is going to last, even when they say "only a minute".

Key reminder..., as an NCO you can ADD to any regulation! You can not omit though! If its not covered such as in this case..., your opinion is the regulation.

Theres no such thing as a standard award, the solider will get the award he or she deserves if the write up id worth a dam. The problem is alot of JR NCOs do not know how to write an effective award. I have personaally written an ARCOM with oonly 3 bullets and it has been approved. Its all in the write up brother. But as you stated this is just my 2 cents

Due to pregnancy? Before receiving the results?
Well, when a Soldier is pregnant they are enrolled in the pregnancy Physical Training program. She received a PT Test few days before she find out, so... That APFT still counts, because nobody knew she was pregnant; she was supposed to be in a good condition. Did that Soldier fail the APFT? Read AR 600-8-2 and you'll find some more info on pregnancy!
Give me some feedback.

NCO Business:: question about family care plan
Thank you. I do have a lawyer already involved, I went to JAG and they stated it is a civilian matter. They gave me a list of civilian lawyers in the area of the case and helped me find one.

Everyone from my NCOIC up, to include the company commander, want all of my legal information and such to try to take military action. I have tried to explain that this is not a new issue that it followed me from a previous assignment and there was nothing that could be done through the military. They think that maybe because my ex is a soldier they could get a no contact order but that is not going to keep him from his child!

But thank you for your help. I keep bugging them and they keep putting it off. I am going to make an appointment at JAG to see if something can be done about their not counseling me. I know this is a requirement.

General Discussion:: VOIP Phones illegal in Korea...., FALSE!
Received this e-mail 4 Sep:

Dear Valued Customers,

Please be informed and reminded that according to the agreement between USFK and LG Dacom effective June 21, 2007, VoIP services not registered under the South Korean Telecom Act is no longer available on bases and camps, and those unregistered VoIP services, including but not limited to, Vonage, Lingo and Magicjack etc., are currently being blocked, without prior notice, from accessing LG Dacom networks.

Not to disadvantage the servicemembers at the time of the agreement, however, the Grandfather Clause has been in effect, and those non-registered VoIP users who had been serving in Korea and signed up for the service on and before June 21, 2007 have been exempt from being blocked.
If you meet the above-mentioned Grandfather Clause requirement yet your US-based VoIP service is being blocked, please visit the nearest LG Dacom shop with the following documents ;

1. Unauthorized VoIP Service Account Information contracted on and before June 21, 2007.
2. Any documents to prove that you had been stationed in Korea before June 21, 2007.

Those customers who have already visited our shop and are currently being Grandfathered do not need to revisit.

The servicemembers who have arrived in Korea after the Grandfather Clause deadline are required to use an authorized South Korean VoIP provider. To accommodate these servicemembers, LG Dacom is currently offering VoIP services in comparable prices that have been approved and accepted by the AAFES and USFK.

It is regretful LG Dacom does not provide US phone numbers at this time, but in our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for USFK personnel while in Korea, we continue to seek ways to achieve this in the near future.

As an AAFES Concessionaire, LG Dacom will continue to do our best to accommodate customer needs, and if you have any inquiries, please contact our customer center at 080-850-1891.

Thank you.

LG Dacom

NCO Business:: SOLDIER SITUATION AWARENESS
Just add your suggestions, ideas, thoughts, and solutions!

Example: Soldier fails a diagnostic APFT
a.Determine the Soldier’s weak area(s)
b.Recommend that the Soldier be enrolled in special population PT and ensure that the program works on the deficiencies
c.Schedule a retest periodically with the Soldier to check performance
d.Offer your time to the Soldier after duty hours or during lunch (first line leader)
e.Formally counsel the Soldier on the consequences of failing two record APFTs and the type of discharge the Soldier could receive

****Just as a reminder; In situations that involve APFT failure, weapons qualification failure, abuse of alcohol or other substance, substandard performance, or conduct that is otherwise unacceptable, you should consider initiating a flag or barring the Soldier from reenlistment. It is imperative that you keep your chain of command informed of all situations. Do not exceed your authority. If you have doubts, discuss the matter with your chain of command. The last step of every situation is the follow-up. Never forget it and always be sincere.

NCO Business:: DERROGATORY STATEMENT
Well the derrogatory statement (magic statement) or magic bullet (as it is called) is basically a summary of what the regulation says concerning the consequences of unacceptable behavior. It is included on the DA Form 4856 for the purpose of building a case against a soldier in the event his/her behavior does not improve or gets worse. If the soldier corrects themselves and gets back in line that is fine, But if they do not then you have a record that the soldier was fully informed of the results of the continued behavior from the beginning. Therefore if/and when you have to start UCMJ measure against the soldier your case will be solid. Does it say that in the regulation? I do not know, but I do know if you do not include the derogatory statement (magic bullet) in the initial and all subsequent counseling for the infraction , you are asking for it to get "kicked back" when you do decide further measures are warranted.

Hopefully this help!

Jokes and Humor:: Chopper pilot lessons that could still be true today
This ones for my helicopter brethren...chopper pilot lessons learned during Vietnam but still true even today....Submitted for inclusion in "My Little Sister's Jokes" on July 2, 2008 by a former helicopter pilot and now blacksmith Dick, Williamsport, Md.

Ok, refill that coffee cup...ready ...here we go!

1. Once you are in the fight, it is way too late to wonder if it was a good idea.

2. There is no such thing as a "fun" hot LZ.

3. It is a fact that helicopter tail rotors are instinctively drawn toward trees, stumps, rocks, etc. While it may be possible to ward off this natural event some of the time,
it cannot, despite the best efforts of the crew, always be prevented. It's just what they do.

4. NEVER get into a fight without more ammunition than the other guy.

5. The engine RPM, and the rotor RPM, must BOTH be kept in the GREEN. Failure to heed this commandment can affect the morale of the crew.

6. There are only two kinds of helicopter pilots: those that have crashed, and those who are going to.

7. Cover your Buddy, so he can be around to cover you.

8. Letters from home are not always great.

9. The madness of war can extract a heavy toll. Please have exact change.

10. Always remember that helicopters are different from airplanes. Helicopters are thousands of pounds of parts all flying in loose forma tion often in opposition to each other, and unlike airplanes, they fly by beating the air into submission.

11. Decisions made by someone over your head will seldom be in your best interest.

12. The terms "Protective Armor" and "Helicopter" are mutually exclusive terms.

13. The further away you are from your friends, the less likely it is that they can help you when you really need them the most.

14. Being good and lucky is not enough, there is always payback.

15. "Chicken Plates" are not something you order in a restaurant.

16. If everything is as clear as a bell, and everything is going exactly as planned, you're about to be surprised.

17. The B.S.R. (Bang, Stare, Read) Theory states that the louder the sudden bang in the helicopter, the quicker your eyes will be drawn to the gauges.

18. The longer you stare at the gauges, the less time it takes them to move from green to red.

19. The sole purpose of our helicopters is to support our grunts. Anyone who forgets that has forgotten the mission.

20. No matter what you do, the bullet with your name on it will get you. So too can the ones addressed "To Whom It May Concern".

21. Gravity may not be fair, but it is the law.

22. If the rear echelon troops are really happy, the front line troops probably do not have what they need.

23. If you are wearing body armor, the incoming will probably miss that part.

24. It hurts less to die with a uniform on than to die in a hospital bed.

25. Happiness is a belt-fed weapon.

26. If something hasn't broken on your helicopter, it's about to.

27. Eat when you can. Sleep when you can. Visit the head when you can. The next opportunity may not come around for a long time, if ever.

28. Combat pay is a flawed concept.

29. Having all your body parts intact and functioning at the end of the day beats the alternative.

30. Air superiority is NOT a luxury.

31. It is always a bad thing to run out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas all at the same time.

32. Nothing is as useless as altitude above you and runway behind you.

33. While the rest of the crew may be in the same predicament, it's almost always the pilot's job to arrive at the crash site first.

34. When you shoot your weapon, clean it the first chance you get.

35. Loud sudden noises in a helicopter WILL get your undivided attention.

36. Hot garrison chow is better than hot C-rations, which, in turn is better than cold C-rations, which is better than no food at all. All of these, however, are preferable to cold rice balls even if they do have the little pieces of fish in them.

37. WHAT is often more important than WHY.

38. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

39. Girlfriends are fair game. Wives are not.

40. Everybody 's a hero on the ground in the officers club and after the fourth drink.

41. There is no such thing as a small firefight.

42. A free-fire zone has nothing to do with economics.

43. The farther you fly into the mountains (or over water), the louder the strange engine noises become.

44. Medals are OK, but having your body and all your friends in one piece at the end of the day is a whole lot better.

45. The only medal you really want to be awarded is the Longevity Medal.

46. Thousands of Vietnam Veterans earned medals for bravery every day. A few were even awarded.

47. In helicopters, there is no such thing as "a good vibration."

48. Running out of pedal, fore or aft cyclic, or collective are all bad ideas. Any combination of these can be deadly.

49. Nomex is NOT fire proof.

50. There is only one rule in war: When you win, you get to make up the Rules.

51. Living and dying can both hurt a lot.

53. While a Super Bomb could be considered one of the four essential building blocks of life, powdered eggs cannot.

54. C-4 can make a dull day fun.

55. Cocoa Powder is neither.

56. There is no such thing as a fair fight, only ones where you win or lose.

57. If you win the battle you are entitled to the spoils. If you lose you don't care.

58. Nobody cares what you did yesterday or what you are going to do tomorrow. What is important is what you are doing NOW to solve our problem.

59. If you have extra, share it quickly.

60. Always make sure someone has a P-38.

61. A sucking chest wound may be God's way of telling you it's time to go home.

62. Prayer may not help...but it can't hurt.

63. Flying is better than walking. Walking is better than running. Running is better than crawling. All of these however, are better than extraction by a Med-Evac, even if this is technically a form of flying.

64. If everyone does not come home, none of the rest of us can ever fully come home.

65. Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR.

66. A grunt is the true reason for the existence of the helicopter. Every helicopter flown in Vietnam had one real purpose: To help the grunt. It is unfortunate that many helicopters never had the opportunity to fulfill their one true mission in life simply because someone forgot this fact.

Amazing isn't it! I wonder who comes up with this good stuff? Probably someone that's "auto-rotated" too many times. Anyway...thank you for the humor and thank you for your service. I'm glad you were always there doing what you do!

Going AWOL? [by StRaTeGy_]

General Discussion:: Going AWOL?
Many people confuse the terms, AWOL and Desertion. Some people believe that AWOL is when someone is absent for less than 30 days, and someone absent from the military for 30 days or more is a deserter. That's not quite true.

Unauthorized absence from the military fall under three articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ): Article 85, Desertion, Article 86, AWOL, and Article 87, Missing Movement. Of the three, Desertion is the most serious offense.

Missing Movement

A military member has violated Article 87 if he/she is ordered to be on a ship or an aircraft, or deploy with a unit on a certain date and time, and then fails to show up. It doesn't matter if the member failed to show up through intention or because of neglect, but it is required that the member knew about the movement. A viable defense would be that the member missed the movement through physical inability (as long as that physical inability wasn't a result of misconduct or neglect). The possible punishment is more severe if the member missed the movement on purpose. It's not uncommon for Missing Movement to be charged in conjunction with AWOL or Desertion, depending on the circumstances.

AWOL

AWOL, or "Absent without Leave," is usually called "Unauthorized Absence" (or UA) by the Navy and Marine Corps, and AWOL by the Army and Air Force. The use of "UA" by the Navy/Marine Corps and "AWOL" by the Army/Air Force is historical. Prior to enactment of the Uniform Code of Military Justice in 1951 the services were governed by separate laws. However, its official title under the current UCMJ is "AWOL" (a rose by any other name is still a rose). It simply means not being where you are supposed to be at the time you are supposed to be there. Being late for work is a violation of Article 86. Missing a medical appointment is a violation. So is disappearing for several days (or months, or years). The maximum possible punishments, which I'll discuss later in this article, depends on the exact circumstances of the absence.

Desertion

Did you know that desertion can result in the death penalty? It's true. The maximum punishment for desertion during "time of war" is death. However, since the Civil War, only one American servicemember has ever been executed for desertion -- Private Eddie Slovik in 1945.

The offense of desertion, under Article 85 carries a much greater punishment than the offense of AWOL, under Article 86. Many people believe that if one is absent without authority for 30 days or more, the offense changes from AWOL to desertion, but that's not quite true.

The primary difference between the two offenses is "intent to remain away permanently." If one intends to return to "military control" someday, one is guilty of AWOL, not desertion, even if they were away for 50 years. Conversely, if a person was absent for just one minute, and then captured, he could be convicted of desertion, if the prosecution could prove that the member intended to remain away from the military permanently.

The 30 Day Rule

So why do so many people confuse desertion and AWOL? It's because the services ADMINISTRATIVELY classify absent members as "deserters" once they have been gone for 30 days.

Once a member goes absent, each of the military services enter the member's information into their DIP (Deserter Information Point). At that time, the services take certain actions, such as stopping the member's pay and allowances, and contacting family members in an attempt to locate the absent member and convince them to return to their unit. On the 30th day, the member is "dropped from the unit rolls," (meaning the unit can fill the emply slot with a new person), and administratively classified as a "deserter." At that point the DIP-folks electronically enter the information into the "Wanted Persons File" in the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer.

That means the information is available to every law enforcement agency in the United States, and the member becomes a "wanted person," subject to arrest by any police officer. United States Code, Title 10, Section 808 states:

Any civil officer having authority to apprehend offenders under the laws of the United States or of a State, Commonwealth, possession, or the District of Columbia may summarily apprehend a deserter from the armed forces and deliver him into the custody of those forces.

The DIP center also sends the information to the Department of State, who then cancels any passports the member may have.

The military doesn't necessarily have to wait the full 30 days before administratively classifying an absent member as a deserter. If the facts and circumstances show that the member intends to remain away permanently (an example would be if they left a note saying they were never going to return), then the member can immediately be classified as such. Also, if he/she has gone to or remains in a foreign country and, while in the foreign country, has requested, applied for, or accepted, any type of asylum or residence permit from that country, they are immediately reclassified as a deserter. Other factors, such as whether the member is awaiting disposition for other military crimes at the time of AWOL, or if the member escape from military prison, can also result in immediate classification as a deserter.

The most significant factor about administrative classification as a deserter is the shift in "burden of proof." If a member, who has been absent for 30 days or less is tried by court-martial, the burden of proof that the member intended to remain away from military control rests on the prosecution. In order to support a guilty verdict for desertion (vice AWOL), the prosecution would have to prove (beyond a reasonable doubt), that the member intended to remain away from the military forever.

However, once the absentee has been administratively declared a deserter, the burden of proof shifts to the defense. The court is allowed to assume that the member intended to remain away permanently, unless the defense can provide clear evidence that the member intended to return to military control.
